WC Basketball is disappointed about the postponement of the Basketball SA Special General Meeting, which was scheduled for the 5th August 2017, to discuss, among others, the dispute lodged by some members. This postponement is especially disappointing since the meeting was initially scheduled for the 29 July 2017 and was rescheduled to coincide with the NBA Africa game. This. in itself, was regrettable as it would have negatively impacted on the quality of the meeting, as members would have been in a rush for the game.
It is also worth noting that this meeting to resolve the Basketball SA governance crisis was originally convened in 2016. It was postponed due to WC Basketball highlighting it would be out of order, since the dispute was lodged with SASCOC, as such it was proper that SASCOC convened such a meeting or confirms that it would be presenting a report in the meeting. It is therefore more disappointing that the stated reasons for the latest postponement is the same one which WC Basketball raised in 2016. This chain of events is demoralizing to the players, coaches and officials who have continued to build Clubs and Districts, with the hope that this Governance impasse would be speedily resolved.
WC Basketball reiterates its position that this current impasse is not in the best interest of Basketball SA and basketball in general in the country. Basketball SA’s position as the driver of basketball is critical and therefore the sport cannot progress without a legitimate and functioning Basketball SA. Although WC Basketball respects the decision of the Basketball SA Exco, perhaps it is now more prudent to agree to the call by WC Basketball to resolve the crisis internally than wait for SASCOC’s intervention. This call is in line with Corporate Governance best practice, an area identified for urgent attention by the EPG Report in Basketball.
WC Basketball therefore calls on Basketball SA to convene an urgent Stakeholders Consultation meeting (Indaba) to discuss the following:
1. Status of the Members of the National General Council, inter alia, Affiliation, Individual Membership
2. Financial Position of Basketball SA
4. “Professional” League
WC Basketball hopes that this public statement will be understood in the context of the longstanding crisis and the urgent need to resolve it in the best interest of basketball in the country.
